A young boy has described in harrowing detail how he tried to stop his dad from stabbing his mum. The youngster wept as he told police his father armed himself with a kitchen knife and started attacking his mother at her Colchester home.
Mother-of-eight Lisa Sweeney died after the attack at her Colchester home earlier this year. She had been stabbed 40 times, Chelmsford Crown Court has heard. Her son told a murder trial jury yesterday how he tried to stop the assault after he saw his father Anthony Sweeney armed with a kitchen knife. She was bleeding everywhere. He added: "I said dad stop, dad stop.
My mum said go and get help. I love all of you, say that to the others'. He was giving evidence in the trial of his year-old father who denies murdering his wife on February 21 this year. As he gave a police interview shortly after the alleged murder by video link in court, his father was seen crying in the dock. The prosecution has alleged Sweeney killed his wife after she asked him for a divorce. He has said he was provoked and acted in self defence. The young son, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told police in a video interview he was off school that day as he had a toothache.
As he watched television at his home in Henry Laver Court, Balkerne Hill, Colchester, he said there was a knock on the door. He said his mum opened the door and his dad came in and said right, you're going to leave me then' and his mum went upstairs to the bathroom. Mrs Sweeney left the bathroom a short while later and the jury heard how the boy then saw his father armed with the knife.
He said are you going to leave me then?
She said let's talk, let's talk'," the boy said. After going outside to get help, the boy returned to the house with a woman who had been passing at the time. The boy added: "She was not breathing. Blood was coming out of her mouth.
My mum was dead. She was not breathing.
I said I love you mum," the boy said. The trial has heard Mrs Sweeney was planning to divorce her husband of 16 years because of Sweeney's bullying, dominating and controlling behaviour, Martyn Levett, prosecuting, said.
The jury of seven women and five men have heard a post-mortem examination revealed 40 stab wounds on MrsSweeney's body - eight to her face, 12 to her chest, 16 to her back and others to her leg and groin areas.
